KARACHI: The sister and brother-in-law of Humaira Asghar have arrived in Karachi to claim the remains of the actress, who was found dead earlier this week in a Defence Phase VI apartment.
Sources claimed that Humaira’s sister has met police officials at the SSP (South) Office to conclude the formalities for claiming the body.
A formal letter, permitting the couple to receive the body, will be issued shortly, police sources said.
The body of Humaira Asghar, known for her roles in television serials such as Ehsaan Faramosh and Guru, was discovered in a decomposed state, and an investigation into her death is ongoing.
Her father, Asghar Ali, flatly refused to own the body of her dead daughter, according to Gizri police.
SHO Farooq Sanjrani said were able to contact Humaira’s father after retrieving contact numbers from her mobile phone. “He told us he had severed ties with her long ago,” and refused to take any responsibility of the body.
Upon his refusal, the Sindh government decided to conduct the burial of Humaira Asghar. Sindh Minister for Culture Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah said the Department of Culture will oversee all burial arrangements, including graveyard coordination.
The Culture Department will act in collaboration with the police to handle the process with due responsibility, he added.
‘Humaira Asghar was my sister,’ Tessori says, will organise her funeral
Moments ago, Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori announced that he will personally arrange the funeral of Humaira Asghar on his own expense at the Governor House, Karachi.
In a video message, the governor said the late actress was “not without kin”, and that as a fellow citizen, he considered her his sister.
“Just like every daughter of Sindh, Humaira Asghar was our own. If her family is unable or unwilling to take part in her final rites, I am here to ensure her dignity is upheld,” he stated.
Tesori announced that arrangements were already underway, as he had directed the in-house Imam to lead Humaira Asghar’s funeral prayers.
“I will bear all the expenses myself,” the governor reiterated. “We must protect the honour and dignity of our women. It’s a question for our society that the body of a young woman lies unclaimed.”
