11 incidents per hour: crime rate soaring in Karachi

KARACHI: In the shadowy alleyways and bustling thoroughfares of our city, a relentless undercurrent of crime is surging through Karachi. With the city’s heartbeat echoing in every footstep, these criminals are making a mockery of law, striking swiftly and then vanishing into the urban labyrinth, leaving victims and the metropolis gripped by fear and insecurity.
The bustling metropolis of Karachi is grappling with an alarming surge in criminal activity, with a staggering eleven incidents reported every hour.
In the month of August alone, Karachi bore witness to a total of 8,207 reported crimes, averaging close to 265 daily incidents, according to recent data from the Citizens Police Liaison Committee (Sindh).

Delving into these grim statistics shows a 300 percent increase in car-jacking incidences. Number of stolen motorcycles was up 39 percent, and stolen mobiles up 23 percent.
In August, 2,582 mobile phones were snatched from the people of Karachi, while 790 motorcycles, and 48 vehicles were taken away from their owners.
These criminal occurrences extend beyond traditional street crimes involving armed robberies. Motorcycles and vehicles have fallen prey to thieves, often snatched when left unattended.
In addition to the robberies mentioned above, 4,604 motorcycles and 183 vehicles were also stolen from the citizens of Karachi.
