FBR clears Imran, Nawaz and Zardari of tax liabilities ahead of 2024 elections

FBR clears

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has cleared prominent political figures, including former PTI chairman Imran Khan, PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, of any tax liabilities after scrutinizing their financial status.

Sources told HUM News English that the FBR had completed the verification of the tax records of these leaders, who have filed their nomination papers for the 2024 elections, and found no outstanding dues against them.

According to the sources, Nawaz Sharif, who was in self-exile until recently, has paid his taxes regularly.

Similarly, Maryam Nawaz, Shehbaz Sharif, Bilawal Bhutto, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, and other major political leaders have also complied with their tax obligations.

The sources said that chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani, who is contesting the election from NA-262 Quetta and PB-32 Quetta, has also obtained a clearance certificate from the FBR. He had initially faced a tax liability of Rs60,000, which he paid promptly, and got his certificate from the commissioner Hyderabad, the sources added.

FBR unmasks 5,000 non-registered election candidates

However, the sources revealed that 4,700 candidates who have submitted nomination papers for the general election 2024, have not been registered with the FBR.

Moreover, more than 23,000 candidates have national tax number (NTN), but hundreds of them have not filed tax returns in the last three years.

The FBR has decided to issue notices to these unregistered and non-filer candidates and bring them into the tax net, the sources said.
