ISLAMABAD: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Lieutenant General (retd) Nazir Ahmed Butt recently paid a visit to the grave of Brigadier (retd) Asad Munir in Islamabad’s Sector H-8 cemetery.

Asad tragically took his own life several years ago, citing harassment by NAB in his suicide note. In his note, Asad expressed hope that his death would prevent others from suffering unjust treatment for crimes they did not commit.
Despite being posthumously acquitted by an accountability court three years after his death, the circumstances leading to his suicide have remained a poignant issue.
Last month, NAB Chief’s office reached out to Asad’s widow, Saeeda, seeking permission for a visit. Initially reluctant, Saeeda agreed to meet after persistent requests. During the meeting with Saeeda and Asad’s brother, Khalid, Butt expressed his condolences and discussed the need to understand Asad’s experience to prevent similar incidents.
He informed the family that NAB is working on drafting Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for investigating government officers to ensure fair treatment.

According to NAB sources, during his next visit to Lahore, the watchdog’s chief plans to visit other individuals affected by NAB’s actions, including a former vice chancellor who was notably handcuffed by NAB.
