ISLAMABAD: Senior journalist Hamid Mir has alleged that former spymaster Lt-Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed, now in custody for court martial by the Pakistan army, was involved in planning the May 9 events and attempted to orchestrate the murders of political figures and journalists.
Speaking on Geo News, Mir claimed that Faiz Hameed used his influence to avoid investigations. He disclosed that Gen Faiz Hameed attempted to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, but his requests were turned down.
Mir explained that Faiz Hameed, who previously served as the head of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), maintained strong connections within Pakistan’s political elite. “Leveraging these connections, Hameed tried to evade scrutiny. Despite recommendations from some members of Sharif’s cabinet to meet with Faiz Hameed, the prime minister refused any contact,” he said.
Mir further revealed that recent investigations have shown that although there were rumours about Faiz Hameed being under house arrest or severe restrictions, he was, in fact, free. His continued liberty proved problematic, as his communications were monitored, leading to the discovery of his involvement in the May 9 events, including advising on the coup attempt.
Mir also mentioned that evidence surfaced last year indicating that when Faiz Hameed was Director-General of ISI, he attempted to orchestrate the assassination of certain political figures and journalists. He stated that there is concrete evidence supporting these claims.
According to Mir, the government recently learned that Faiz Hameed remained in contact with some leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) and attempted to exert influence over them. One PTI leader reportedly complained to the party leadership about Faiz Hameed’s attempts to dictate terms.
National Security Affairs specialist Syed Muhammad Ali added that taking Faiz Hameed into custody signifies that the investigation has reached a critical stage. His arrest, according to Ali, sends a clear message that no one, regardless of rank, is above the law.
