WEB DESK: Samsung keeps making its smartphone cameras better each year, and it looks like they’re sticking to this plan. The tech giant has been working on a new technology to make their smartphone cameras more stable.
From one of the company’s patent filings, it seems they’re focusing on something called Sensor-Shift Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS).
Sensor Shift OIS could help Samsung phones take even clearer pictures and videos. Samsung’s first phone with OIS was the Galaxy S6, launched in 2015. Since then, they’ve improved it but have stuck with the same method of stabilising the lens.
Apple changed to Sensor Shift OIS with the iPhone 12 Pro Max in 2020, while Samsung was spotted working on it in 2021 and 2023. However, Samsung hasn’t added this feature to any of its phones yet.
In July 2024, Samsung filed a new patent, which was discovered by GalaxyClub. The patent talks about a camera stabilisation method similar to Sensor Shift OIS, explaining how using less force to stabilise the camera makes it more accurate.
The 32-page patent shows that Samsung is still developing Sensor Shift OIS for its smartphones. However, it doesn’t say when this feature will be available.
Many people thought the Galaxy S24 would have it, but it didn’t. Now, there’s hope that it might come with the Galaxy S25 Ultra, which is expected to have a big camera upgrade.
The Galaxy S25 Ultra might come with a 200MP main camera, a 50MP ultrawide camera, two 50MP zoom cameras, and a 12MP front camera. Bigger sensors like these should improve picture and video quality.
Even though the Galaxy S24 Ultra didn’t have Sensor Shift OIS, it still performed well against the iPhone 15 Pro Max. If the Galaxy S25 Ultra does get Sensor Shift OIS, it could make Samsung’s cameras even better than Apple’s.
