WEB DESK: Lahore’s air is ‘toxic’ after a thick blanket of smog has once again engulfed Lahore, posing serious health risks to residents. It looks like the smog seen last year has made a comeback.
According to the Environmental Protection Department (EPD), Lahore’s air quality index (AQI) was recorded at 353, a level considered as extremely harmful for breathing and overall outdoor activities.
Unfortunately, Lahore’s air was labelled as toxic in a recent article published on Express News.
The increase in AQI can be blamed on easterly winds, lower temperatures, and higher humidity. This situation is expected to remain for a few more days.
As the weather gets colder and humidity eases, air quality might get better during the daytime.
The EPD has issued an advisory that advises citizens to stay indoors and wear N95 masks and goggles if outdoor activities are necessary.
The department also recommended limiting outdoor visits, keeping windows and doors shut, along with regularly monitoring AQI, especially before leaving home.
Elderly citizens along with those having heart or respiratory issues are advised to stay indoors unless there is an emergency.
According to latest reports, citizens of Lahore have already reported various health problems, including eye irritation, sore throats, and increased heart rates.
Traffic congestion has worsened the situation further contributing to the smog.
The EPD has asked citizens to keep their cars well-maintained as smoke-emitting vehicles can also worsen the situation.
Efforts to control the smog are underway to protect vulnerable from the harmful effects of smog including children and the elderly.
