Govt-PTI talks: Next round scheduled for tomorrow

Govt-PTI talks

ISLAMABAD: The next round of negotiations between the government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is set for tomorrow (Thursday).

To ease political tensions in the country, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has called an in-camera meeting of committees representing both sides on January 2, 2025. According to a statement from the Speaker, the crucial meeting will be held at Parliament House at 11:30 am.

This meeting follows the December 23 talks between the govt and PTI and aims to continue dialogue. PTI will present its demands in writing during the January 2 session, as the first round of talks reportedly ended on a positive note.

Sources reveal that PTI, after consulting its leadership, has decided to focus on two key demands: the release of under-trial political prisoners and the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the events of May 9 and November 26, 2023.

According to sources, Imran Khan is unwilling to be placed under house arrest and wants to serve his sentence in jail. Moreover, Khan is still insistent on the civil disobedience move and has asked his sister to reach out to Pakistanis in the UK and tell them to stop sending remittances to Pakistan.

The party plans to submit these demands in writing during the govt and PTI talks meeting and hopes for their resolution as confidence-building measures before advancing discussions. All members of PTI’s negotiation committee are expected to attend the upcoming talks.
