ECP defers PTI chief’s indictment in contempt case

ISLAMABAD: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday deferred the indictment of PTI Chairman till August 22 in a case pertaining to contempt of the electoral body and the chief election commissioner (CEC).

A-four member bench headed by Sindh member Nisar Ahmad Durrani condcuted proceedings into the case.
At the outset, counsel Shoaib Shaheen, requested the bench to allow his client exemption from appearance and sought an adjournment of the case till September to the court holidays. The lawyer argued that he could get the record of only one case.
ECP Khyber Pakhtunkhwa member Justice (r) Ikram Ullah Khan stressed, “PTI chief should have appeared as he was due to be indicted today”.

The ECP officer said: “We have an authority to take action under Section 10” and asked if the PTI chief will appear before the commission during next hearing.

“There are chances,” the PTI lawyer replied.

The counsel informed the court his client is appearing before different courts and he would try to make sure his presence before the bench for the next hearing.
After hearing the arguments, the bench adjourned the hearing till August 22, when PTI chair is set to be indicted.

During the last hearing on July 25, PTI chief appeared before the election watchdog for the first time since the case was iniated in August last year.
