Rs5.76 per unit power tariff hike approved for K-Electric consumers

K-Electric power tariff

KARACHI: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has approved a positive adjustment of Rs5.76 per unit in K-Electric’s (KE) tariff for May and June 2024, enabling the utility to recover approximately Rs10 billion from consumers under the Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA).

This increase in tariff will be reflected in the electricity bills issued in October and November 2024.

Initially, K-Electric had requested a higher adjustment of Rs5.92 per unit, aiming to recover an additional Rs10.036 billion. However, Nepra did not approve all of the costs claimed by the power company, resulting in a slightly lower adjustment.

Nepra has issued the necessary notification to both the government and K-Electric to implement this decision.

In a public hearing held on 30 July 2024, Nepra considered the views of various stakeholders, including those of K-Electric, before making its decision.

The FCA adjustment will apply to all consumer categories except for Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS) and lifeline consumers. The adjustment will be itemised separately in the consumers’ bills based on the units consumed in the relevant months.

K-Electric is required to reflect the FCA for May and June 2024 in the bills for October and November 2024, respectively. While implementing the FCA, K-Electric must adhere to any existing court orders in addition to Nepra’s directives.
