ISLAMABAD: Ride-hailing app Careem is winding down its operations in Pakistan and will cease all ride services in the country from July 18, 2025, the company announced. The decision marks the end of nearly a decade of operations in one of its earliest markets.
In a message to users and drivers, Careem cited growing competition and economic challenges as key reasons behind its exit. The platform has faced stiff competition in recent years from rivals such as inDrive, Yango, and Bykea, which have steadily expanded their presence and gained market share.
“This was an incredibly difficult decision,” Careem Co-founder and CEO Mudassir Sheikha wrote in a post on LinkedIn. “The challenging macroeconomic reality, intensifying competition, and global capital allocation made it hard to justify the investment levels required to deliver a safe and dependable service in the country. In the end, the Careem Rides team had to make this tough call.”
At its peak, Careem had become a popular choice among office workers, university students and especially women commuters, thanks to its safety features and promotional discounts. However, in recent years, the app struggled to compete with platforms like inDrive, which allow users to negotiate fares directly with drivers, a feature that proved popular among price-sensitive Pakistani riders.
Careem tried to roll out similar features and reintroduce discounts, but by then, a significant portion of its user base had shifted to competitors. Fare differences, along with limited driver availability in some areas, made it difficult for Careem to regain lost ground.
Careem has begun notifying users via in-app alerts and messages. In a note sent to customers, the company said:
“After many memorable years, Careem services will no longer be operational in Pakistan as of 18th July 2025. This was not an easy decision to make.
We’re deeply thankful for every booking you made with us — from everyday errands to big life moments. You’ve been at the heart of our journey.
If you have a remaining balance in your Careem Wallet, we’ll be in touch soon with clear instructions on how to reclaim it. Careem Care will remain available until 18th September 2025 to help with any pending issues or questions.”
Despite its exit from Pakistan’s ride-hailing sector, Careem will continue to operate in nine other countries, including the UAE and Saudi Arabia, where it still maintains an active presence.
