Committee formed to investigate overbilling by power companies

electricity prices

WEB DESK: Expressing deep concern over the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority’s (Nepra) report, which accuses distribution companies (Discos) of malpractice and overbilling in electricity provision, the Power Division has established an independent committee to thoroughly investigate the findings and legal aspects.

The newly formed inquiry committee, led by former power secretary Irfan Ali and appointed by the Power Division secretary, includes key members such as the head of Nespak, a former executive of public sector power companies, and the ex-managing director of the National Transmission & Dispatch Company (NTDC).

Nepra’s investigation revealed that approximately 14 million domestic consumers nationwide were billed for more than 30 days by power companies, with millions of others subjected to overbilling through various unfair practices.

Additionally, a significant number of consumers were inaccurately charged due to defective metres.

Notably, this marks a significant development as it is the first instance where an administrative head of regulated entities or licensees has set up a committee to investigate the actions of a regulatory body concerning the performance of these entities.
