WEB DESK: Pakistani electricity consumers, already grappling with inflation, are set to face an additional burden as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has approved a tariff hike of Rs2.75 per unit for the current quarter of the fiscal year 2023-24.
The approved hike, totaling Rs85.2 billion for the second quarter of FY2023-24, will have a uniform impact of Rs2.75 per unit on each consumer.
This adjustment replaces the currently applicable two quarterly adjustments of Rs4.43 per unit, which will cease to exist from March 30, 2024, according to a statement issued by the power regulatory authority on Thursday.
Nepra has decided to implement the second quarterly adjustment from April 2024 onwards, following the expiry of the existing applicable adjustments.
The additional amount will be reflected in the electricity bills of April, May, and June for consumers of XWDISCOs and K-Electric, excluding lifeline consumers.
The decision on the fresh tariff hike has been forwarded by Nepra to the federal government for final approval, after which it will be notified to the public.
In addition to the electricity tariff hike, there are also reports indicating a potential increase in petroleum product prices in the upcoming fortnightly review scheduled for April 1st.
