ISLAMABAD: The latest monthly adjustments mean the electricity tariff for the consumers in Karachi has been reduced, while those in the rest of Pakistan will find their bills slightly increased, after the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) notified the move.
In this connection, the power regulator issued two separate notifications, as different Distribution Companies (DISCOs) supply power to consumers in their respective areas barring Karachi of Pakistan.
The mega city comes under the jurisdiction of K-Electric, which plays two roles – power generation and distribution.

Hence, the notification concerning the K-Electric consumers says the power tariff is slashed by Rs2.99 per unit for the month of March 2025.
The consumers will now get this relief in the monthly bills of June.
As far as the other parts of Pakistan are concerned, the NEPRA has determined that the electricity tariff should be raised by Rs0.93 (93 paisa) per unit for the power they used in the month of April.
FUEL PRICE ADJUSTMENT
The latest notifications are a result of monthly Fuel Price Adjustment (FPA). It is NEPRA which makes the calculations on the basis of data provided by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA).
In determining the FPA for a particular month, the country’s top power regulator takes into account the kind of fuel used for electricity generation.
So, the net power tariff can increase one month, but decrease next month thanks to the FPA.
On the other hand, the NEPRA is also responsible for the quarterly adjustment, which involves overall expenses like the capacity charges paid to independent power producers (IPPs).

Earlier this month, the NEPRA had approved a negative quarterly adjustment of Rs1.5538 per unit for the third quarter of fiscal year 2024-25, to be applied over a three-month period from May to July 2025.
