sugar mills crackdown

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has initiated an inquiry into those allegedly involved in creating an artificial sugar shortage and raising its prices, following orders from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

According to sources, the FIA’s Anti-Corruption Circle has sought the help of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to investigate the situation. The agency has officially written to the PTA, requesting data on 11 individuals, which includes sugar mill administrators and businessmen.

Among those under scrutiny are notable figures such as Aneeb Faraz, Muhammad Arshad, Muhammad Anwar, Muhammad Yashir, Rashid Alam, Younas, Muhammad Soiab Sohail, Ahsan Shabir, Muhammad Arif, Abdur Rasheed Meer, and Muhammad Naveed Meer.

The FIA is also examining activities linked to the illegal buying and selling of sugar, according to reports.

Meanwhile, the ongoing conflict between sugar mill owners and the government over pricing continues without resolution. The millers have resisted calls to lower sugar prices.

At present, sugar is reportedly being sold in retail markets for Rs170 to Rs175 per kilogram, with no significant price drop seen, despite government interventions to stabilise the market.
