ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar on Wednesday said Pakistan has launched its first-ever 10-year roadmap for a national fisheries policy aimed at sustainable development, food security, and inclusive growth.
Speaking at the policy launch ceremony, the minister said the fisheries and aquaculture sectors had long been neglected despite their potential. He noted that the share of fisheries in Pakistan’s gross domestic product (GDP) remains below 0.5 per cent.
“The new policy seeks to ensure food security, protect marine resources, and promote sustainable practices,” Junaid Anwar said, adding that coordination between the federal and provincial governments will be central to its success.
The roadmap also includes measures to address climate change, safeguard the environment, and introduce modern technologies to improve the sector’s efficiency and resilience.
The minister said that the rights of women, children, and labourers working in the fisheries sector have been given special attention in the policy framework.
“This policy serves as a foundation, but its success will depend on the active participation and commitment of all stakeholders,” he said. “Implementation will require seriousness and practical cooperation from the concerned parties.”
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs said the national fisheries policy aims to align with international standards and enhance Pakistan’s marine economy through responsible and inclusive governance.
