Govt’s total borrowing for FY25 surpasses Rs191 billion

ISLAMABAD: The government of Pakistan has borrowed Rs39.21 billion during the week ending on August 23, 2024.

This brings the total amount it has borrowed so far in the fiscal year 2025 to Rs191.78 billion, according to the central bank.

Government borrowings are generally divided into three main categories: budgetary support (money to help with the government’s budget), commodity operations (money related to buying and selling goods like wheat), and others.

During this week, the government borrowed Rs39.75 billion for budgetary support. However, it paid back Rs411.83 million for commodity operations and Rs127.41 million for other loans.

Overall, for the fiscal year 2025, the government has borrowed Rs432.11 billion for budgetary support, paid back Rs238.59 billion for commodity operations, and repaid Rs1.74 billion for other loans.

The two main sources of money for budgetary support are the State Bank of Pakistan and other banks in the country.

This year, the government has paid back a total of Rs124.78 billion to the State Bank. The Federal government repaid Rs283.45 billion, but the provincial government borrowed Rs182.74 billion. Meanwhile, the AJK government repaid Rs14.06 billion, and the GB government repaid Rs10.01 billion.
