Govt repays Rs228.41 billion debt in one week

WEB DESK: In a recent financial update, the Government of Pakistan has successfully repaid Rs228.41 billion during the week ending July 12, 2024.
This repayment has reduced the total net borrowing for the ongoing fiscal year 2025 to Rs212.02 billion, according to estimates released by the central bank.
Government borrowings are classified into three primary categories: budgetary support, commodity operations, and others.
For the specified week, the breakdown of repayments is as follows:
Budgetary support: Rs126.32 billion
Commodity operations: Rs101.26 billion
Others: Rs830.23 million
In total, the cumulative repayments for fiscal year 2025 stand at Rs91.98 billion for budgetary support, Rs119.16 billion for commodity operations, and Rs0.89 billion for other categories.
The primary sources of financing for budgetary support this fiscal year are the State Bank of Pakistan and Scheduled Banks. Specifically, the government has borrowed a net amount of Rs50.19 billion from the central bank.
This figure includes Rs7.99 billion borrowed by the Federal Government, Rs43.64 billion by the Provincial Governments, Rs1.33 billion retired by the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Government, and Rs0.11 billion retired by the Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) Government.
Conversely, Scheduled Banks have repaid a net total of Rs142.17 billion, with the entire amount being repaid by the Federal Government. The Provincial Governments have not made any repayments to Scheduled Banks during this period.
