ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s pickup segment is set for a significant shift with the expected arrival of the GWM Poer Cannon Alpha, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) developed by Chinese automaker Great Wall Motors.
Currently on display at the Shanghai Auto Show 2025, the vehicle has been designed with a strong focus on comfort and modern utility. As GWM already operates in Pakistan through its Haval brand, there is speculation that the company may consider launching this electric pickup in the local market.
While no official announcement has been made regarding its launch timeline or confirmation for Pakistan, discussions on platforms such as PakWheels and other automotive groups suggest there is growing interest and a possibility of its introduction.
Traditionally, Pakistani users of pickups such as the Toyota Hilux, Revo, Vigo, Nissan, and Isuzu have frequently raised concerns about rear-seat discomfort, especially in locally referred “daala” variants. The Poer Cannon Alpha seems to address this issue, offering a cabin that prioritises both driver and passenger comfort—something rarely associated with this vehicle category.
Visually, the Poer Cannon Alpha stands out with its bold styling, vibrant colour options, and modern aesthetics.
However, it is the interior that truly redefines the pickup experience. With wooden accents, black chrome finishes, and a gear knob designed to resemble an aircraft throttle, the cabin delivers the feel of a high-end SUV rather than a conventional utility vehicle.
The long-wheelbase design allows for noticeably more space in the back seats, a major plus for Pakistani buyers accustomed to cramped “daala” setups.
The rear section of the pickup is designed for both adventure and work. It features a powered tailgate with hydraulic struts for effortless access, even for shorter users. Roof rails and thoughtfully placed compartments add to the vehicle’s practicality, while the rear bed space can be adapted for either luggage or tools, reinforcing its dual role as a lifestyle and utility vehicle.
A factory-fitted snorkel hints at its off-road capabilities, ensuring it remains functional in Pakistan’s varied terrain.
As a plug-in hybrid, the Poer Cannon Alpha combines a 2.0-litre petrol engine with electric power, offering improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions. It supports both AC and DC charging, with easily accessible charging ports integrated into the rear of the vehicle.
For a market like Pakistan—where utility vehicles are often stripped down to the basics—the GWM Poer Cannon Alpha presents a compelling alternative. It combines ruggedness with refinement, and for those who’ve long endured uncomfortable rides in traditional pickups, this may be the change they’ve been waiting for.
