Intraday trade: PKR appreciates by 12 paisa against USD

KARACHI: The Pakistani rupee (PKR) appreciated by 12 paisa against the US dollar (USD) on the final trading day of February, closing at Rs279.60 in the interbank market on Friday.

Currency exchange companies were quoting the USD at Rs279.60 against the PKR.

During the ongoing fiscal year, the PKR has weakened by Rs1.38 or 0.49 per cent against the USD. Since the start of 2025, it has declined by Rs1.17 or 0.42 per cent.

According to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the PKR depreciated by 10.73 paisa or 0.04 per cent against the USD in Thursday’s interbank session, closing at Rs279.72 compared to Rs279.62 on Wednesday.

This marks the rupee’s lowest level against the US dollar, reflecting a 0.79 per cent drop from its 52-week high of Rs277.51, recorded on 4th October 2024.

Currency exchange companies were quoting the USD at Rs279.20 for buying and Rs281.50 for selling.

The PKR has now spent 146 days below its last peak, highlighting continued pressure on the external front. Here’s how the PKR performed against other major currencies on the final trading day of February:

GBP to PKR: The PKR fell by 54.14 paisa or 0.15 per cent, closing at Rs354.44 compared to Rs353.90 a day earlier.

Dirham to PKR: The PKR dropped by 3.13 paisa or 0.04 per cent against the UAE Dirham, finishing at Rs76.16.

Euro to PKR: The PKR strengthened by 69.85 paisa or 0.24 per cent against the Euro, closing at Rs292.93 compared to Rs293.62.

JPY to PKR: The PKR weakened by 0.31 paisa or 0.17 per cent against the Japanese Yen, closing at Rs1.8748 from Rs1.8717.

CHF to PKR: The PKR gained 89.18 paisa or 0.29 per cent against the Swiss Franc, closing at Rs311.91.

SAR to PKR: The PKR declined by 2.07 paisa or 0.03 per cent against the Saudi Riyal, closing at Rs74.58.

CNY to PKR: The PKR strengthened by 4.73 paisa or 0.12 per cent against the Chinese Yuan, closing at Rs38.49 from Rs38.54.
