KARACHI: Karachi’s sole electricity provider, K-Electric, has requested the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) to approve a substantial increase in electricity tariffs.
On Saturday, K-Electric filed a petition seeking a rise of Rs5.45 per unit under the Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA) mechanism for the months of May and June.
If granted, this increase would impose significant additional financial pressure on consumers already struggling with high inflation and diminishing incomes. The utility has specifically requested a Rs2.53 per unit increase for May and a Rs2.92 per unit increase for June.
Should Nepra approve this request in its upcoming hearing on July 30, the added financial burden on consumers could amount to Rs10 billion.
This request follows the recent decision by the government to raise the base tariff for domestic consumers by up to Rs48.84 per unit earlier this week, driven by increased petroleum levies and new taxes on agricultural income.
Despite the planned hike, users consuming up to 200 units per month will be exempt from the increase for the next three months.
In a related development, Nepra had previously approved an Rs3.3287 per unit increase for May 2024 due to the monthly FCA; however, this adjustment did not affect K-Electric customers.
The recent approval by the federal cabinet also saw a rise in the base tariff for various consumer categories, including Rs8.04 per unit for commercial consumers, Rs6.62 for agricultural consumers, Rs6.96 for general services, and Rs5.96 for bulk consumers.
