DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES: Mall of the Emirates, one of the premier shopping and leisure destinations in the Middle East, is set to embark on a AED 5 billion expansion, adding 20,000 square meters of retail space and introducing 100 new stores, according to its owner, Majid Al Futtaim Group.
This multi-year project aims to transform the iconic Dubai landmark, which opened its doors in September 2005 and quickly became renowned for its indoor ski slope and luxury shopping options.
To date, AED 1.1 billion has already been invested in significant enhancements to the mall, which include a new wellness club, a cultural hub, a dining precinct, and upgrades to its infrastructure, as stated by the company.
Khalifa Bin Braik, CEO of Majid Al Futtaim Asset Management, pointed out: “Two decades ago, Mall of the Emirates set a new standard for retail and entertainment in the region. Today, we’re building on that legacy with a bold investment that redefines what a mall can be.”
According to him, the investment will enhance both the mall’s physical space and the overall visitor experience, introducing new entertainment options and modern dining experiences while improving access and infrastructure.
From flying taxis to underground systems, Dubai has ambitious plans for urban mobility
Key features of the expansion include a new indoor-outdoor precinct that will offer a variety of fast-casual dining and interactive entertainment options. This will feature the mall’s first outdoor food and beverage courtyard, expected to open in early 2027.
“This versatile space will transform into a lush green oasis during the cooler months, providing visitors with a refreshing new way to enjoy the mall’s diverse culinary offerings,” the company noted.
Infrastructure upgrades are also in progress, including a comprehensive revamp of the West End district and improved road access via the Umm Suqeim bridge and Sheikh Zayed Road, in partnership with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). These improvements, along with an innovative barrierless parking system from Parkin, are scheduled for completion by September 2024.
The expansion will introduce several new entertainment options, with four new venues expected to open by late 2026.
Vox Cinemas has already launched what it promotes as the world’s most advanced IMAX experience at the mall. Additionally, the anticipated New Covent Garden theatre is expected to have a soft launch in mid-2025, with a grand opening planned later that year.
Further lifestyle and entertainment offerings within the new precinct are projected to be completed by 2026, while the dining establishments and North End spaces are set to open in early 2027.
“We have many more projects underway and will be announcing them soon, ranging from high-end restaurants to enhanced experiences for our VIC (Very Important Customer) community,” Bin Braik concluded.
