WEB DESK: In a significant move towards enhancing food safety and transparency, the Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has launched a comprehensive milk traceability system across 10 tehsils in the region.

This initiative aims to track the journey of milk from farms to consumers’ households and ensure its adherence to the stringent standards set by the Punjab Food Authority.

PFA Director General, M Asim Javaid, addressed the media on Tuesday, shedding light on the key aspects of the traceability system, its implementation strategy, and the mandatory registration process for milk carrier vehicles.

Emphasising the importance of the milk traceability system, Javaid explained that it revolves around monitoring the origin of milk, its processing methods, and the entire supply chain until it reaches the end-user.

“The objective is to guarantee the safety, cleanliness, and compliance with Punjab Food Authority standards for the milk consumed by the public,” stated Javaid.

The first phase of the programme will be executed in 10 tehsils, including Lahore, Kasur, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Multan, Sahiwal, and Bahawalpur.

To participate in the traceability system, all ‘Gawala’ (milkmen) and milk suppliers are required to register with the Punjab Food Authority by the end of March.

This registration encompasses various vehicles used in the transportation of milk, such as tankers, chillers, pick-ups, bikes, and rickshaws.

Javaid stressed that the implementation of the milk traceability system represents a substantial stride towards building consumer confidence and fostering transparency in the dairy industry.

He highlighted the pride that dairy farmers and milkmen can take in showcasing their participation in a traceable system, thereby adding value to their products.

“The ultimate goal is to achieve complete oversight of the milk delivery process,” affirmed Javaid.

A comprehensive record of the daily milk supply from registered milkmen and suppliers will be diligently maintained, further ensuring accountability and quality control in the dairy sector.

This initiative is poised to not only elevate food safety standards but also boost the credibility of the dairy industry in Punjab.
