Pakistan’s power generation rises 7.2 per cent YoY: NEPRA data

ISLAMABAD: Power generation increased 7.2 per cent in October 2024, reaching 10,262 GWh, compared to 9,570 GWh in October 2023, as per data from the National Electric Power Authority (NEPRA).
However, when compared to the previous month, September 2024, power generation saw a 17.8 per cent decline from 12,486 GWh.
In first four months of the ongoing fiscal year, total power generation was 50,808 GWh and 5.4 per cent less than 53,707 GWh during the exact period last year.
The average fuel cost for generating electricity in October fell 19 per cent YoY to Rs9.26 per kWh down from Rs11.43 in the previous year. However, it rose 1.9 per cent compared to September 2024.
Hydel, coal, gas, RLNG, Iranian imports, bagasse and solar energy all saw increases in their electricity production in October, with coal and bagasse leading the way, up by 45 per cent and 73.8 per cent, respectively, year-on-year.
On the other hand, nuclear and wind power generation decreased by 21 per cent and 0.6 per cent, respectively.
In terms of contribution, hydropower led the generation mix in October with a 31.1 per cent share, followed by coal at 23.6 per cent, RLNG at 19.5 per cent, nuclear at 14.1 per cent, and gas at 8.0 per cent.
