SBP issues warning against advanced online scams targeting bank accounts

State Bank of Pakistan warns against fake scam web links

WEB DESK: In response to the escalating threat of online scams, particularly those targeting the bank accounts of individuals, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has issued a warning to the public.

The SBP is actively working to raise awareness among individuals who may be vulnerable to scams, urging them to exercise caution when sharing their bank details and personal information.

The warning comes as a proactive measure to address the increasing prevalence of scams, where fraudsters employ unique techniques to ensnare unsuspecting bank customers.

These scammers, utilising sophisticated methods, aim to deceive individuals into divulging their confidential information, including bank details and PIN numbers. Unfortunately, many Pakistanis have already fallen victim to such scams, resulting in the loss of their hard-earned money.

Traditionally, scam calls targeting bank customers’ mobile phones have been a prevalent tactic. However, the SBP highlights a concerning shift in strategy, with scammers now targeting internet users.

These malicious actors often employ deceptive tactics, sending seemingly harmless links that, when clicked, compromise the privacy and confidential information of the unsuspecting victims.

The SBP underscores the sophistication of these scams, noting that scammers use realistic and professional techniques that can be challenging to discern, not only for the layman but also for working professionals.

The central bank urges the public to exercise extreme caution and avoid clicking on any suspicious links received, especially those that may appear convincingly crafted to disguise their true nature.

In a recent social media post, the SBP reiterated key precautions, advising individuals never to share personal banking information with anyone.

The central bank assured the public that legitimate banks would never call customers asking for their UAN number or request personal details through messages or website links.

The SBP’s latest message serves as a crucial reminder for individuals to remain vigilant and safeguard their financial information in the face of evolving and increasingly sophisticated online scams.
