Weekly borrowing update: Govt acquires Rs106.78 billion for budgetary support

ISLAMABAD: The government of Pakistan took on an additional debt of Rs106.78 billion in the week ending September 6, 2024, bringing the total borrowing for the ongoing fiscal year 2025 to Rs600.74 billion, according to data from the central bank.
Government borrowing has stayed consistently high in recent years. This borrowing is typically divided into budgetary support, commodity operations, and other loans.
In the past week, the government borrowed Rs106.79 billion for budgetary support, while Rs0.28 million was paid back for commodity operations, and Rs7.61 million was repaid under the “others” category.
As a result, the total borrowing for the fiscal year 2025 now stands at Rs842.03 billion for budgetary support, Rs239.54 billion has been repaid for commodity operations, and Rs1.74 billion was paid back under the “others” category.
The two main sources of funds for budgetary support are the State Bank of Pakistan and scheduled banks. So far this fiscal year, the government has paid a net amount of Rs395.3 billion to the central bank.
