Pakistan’s monthly power generation sees 5.3 per cent decline

ISLAMABAD: In September 2024, Pakistan’s power generation dropped by 6.4 per cent, producing a total of 12,486 GWh compared to 13,339 GWh in the same month last year.

According to figures from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), month-on-month, power generation also saw a decline of 5.3 per cent from August’s 13,180 GWh.

Overall power output clocked in at 40,546 GWh. This shows 8.1 per cent reduction from 44,137 GWh reported in the first quarter of previous fiscal year.

Breakdowns show key sources like hydropower, furnace oil, natural gas, regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG), nuclear, and wind saw YoY reductions in September, with furnace oil leading the decline at 83.8 per cent.

However, power from coal, imports from Iran, bagasse (sugarcane waste), and solar increased, with imports from Iran surging by 65.1 per cent and solar by 33.3 per cent.

According to Mettis Global, hydropower continued to lead in terms of contribution, comprising 38.7 per cent of electricity produced in September. Coal followed with a 19.3 per cent share, RLNG at 16.3 per cent, nuclear at 12.8 per cent, and natural gas at 7.9 per cent.
