PSX jumps by 2,100 points after early dip on first trading day of 2025

KARACHI: The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) began 2025 on a strong note, with the benchmark KSE-100 Index soaring by over 1,800 points during the early hours of trading.
By 11:19 AM, the KSE-100 index had reached 116,993.42 points, marking a substantial gain of 1,866.52 points.
The surge continued, with the KSE-100 index up by 2,155.39 points at 117,282 around 2:11 PM, reflecting a gain of 1.87 per cent.
This rally came after a rough start earlier in the day when the index had dipped into the red. At 9:35 AM, it stood at 114,719.89 points, down by 407.01 points from its previous close of 115,126.90.
Around 11:20 AM, some of the top gainers in the KSE-100 index were PGLC, which rose by 9.98 per cent, FFC up by 6.74 per cent, MLCF increased by 5.94 per cent, EFUG gained 5.13 per cent, and LUCK climbed by 4.94 per cent.
On the other hand, the top losers included POML, down by 3.20 per cent, NRL fell by 2.78 per cent, CNERGY dropped by 2.67 per cent, PSEL decreased by 2.22 per cent, and ATRL was down by 1.30 per cent.
Despite the initial drop, the PSX quickly recovered after 9:38 AM and has remained in positive territory since then. Strong buying interest was observed in key sectors, including automobiles, cement, commercial banks, fertilizers, oil and gas exploration, OMCs, power generation, and pharmaceuticals.
Some of the major stocks trading in the green included HUBCO, SNGPL, MARI, OGDC, ENGRO, MCB, and MEBL.
On the last trading day of 2024, the KSE-100 index closed nearly unchanged at 115,126.90 points, down by just 132.09 points, or 0.11 per cent.
The PSX witnessed an impressive turnaround in 2024 after several years of sluggish performance. Stocks surged by 84.34 per cent, making it the second-best performing stock market globally, according to analysts.
Over the past 18 months, the PSX has gained 178 per cent, marking the strongest performance in Pakistan’s 77-year history over such a short period.
