PSX opens August on a positive note after US trade deal

KARACHI: The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) opened the first trading session of August 2025 on a positive note, with the benchmark KSE-100 Index gaining 125.57 points, or 0.09 percent, to reach 139,515.99 in early trade on Friday. As of 10:24 AM, the index was up by 70.01 points, or 0.05 percent, trading at 139,460.43.
During this time, the KSE-100 Index saw an intraday high of 139,634.90 and a low of 138,957.70, with a trading volume of nearly 54 million shares. On a year-on-year basis, the index has surged by 79.39 percent, while the year-to-date gain stands at 21.14 percent. The index has moved between 76,943.24 and 140,585.39 over the past 52 weeks.
Among the top performers, GRYL rose by 11.43 percent to Rs9.75, STML gained 10 percent to Rs39.48, and GOC also climbed 10 percent to Rs142.11. Other strong gainers included ANTM, BAFS, SASML, ASLCPS, PKGI, NEXT, and ELSM, all registering significant advances.
On the losing side, CCM fell nearly 10 percent to Rs52.21, while FSWL and KCL dropped 9.85 percent and 9.41 percent respectively. Other notable decliners were ARCTM, ASIC, FPRM, CSAP, BNL, MSOT, and CLVL, all posting losses between 6 and 9 percent.
Pakistan Stocks plummet amid escalating Middle East tensions
The latest upward movement follows a strong finish to July, as the PSX closed Thursday’s session with a notable gain of 978.17 points, or 0.71 percent, to settle at 139,390.42. Investor sentiment was lifted by a surprise announcement from US President Donald Trump, who revealed a new trade deal between Pakistan and the United States.
The agreement includes plans to jointly develop Pakistan’s oil reserves, with Trump hinting at possible US investment in the country’s energy sector and the potential for future oil exports to India. The news triggered a sharp rally, particularly in Exploration and Production (E&P) stocks such as OGDC, PPL, and MARI, amid rising expectations of foreign direct investment and technology collaboration.
During Thursday’s session, the index recorded an intraday high of 140,215.22 and a low of 139,083.74, with total trading volume exceeding 291 million shares.
