PSX sheds 1,231 points amid late-session sell-off

KARACHI: The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) opened on a strong note on Tuesday, with the benchmark KSE-100 index climbing over 800 points during early trading hours, driven by investor confidence and strong buying across several sectors.

At around 10:19 AM, the KSE-100 index had jumped 866.2 points to reach 140,246.25, with trading volume standing at over 40 million shares. By 10:24 AM, the index had further advanced to 140,256.41, marking a gain of 876.36 points or 0.63 per cent from the previous close of 139,380.05. During this time, the index touched an intraday high of 140,288.80 and a low of 139,733.06, with total traded volume rising to over 42.5 million shares.

The market’s performance continues to reflect a strong recovery, with the KSE-100 index showing a one-year increase of 77.93 per cent and a year-to-date gain of 21.83 per cent. The total value of shares traded stood at nearly Rs4.7 billion by 10:30 AM.

Among the top gainers were CHBL, ASLCPS, DIIL, and SARC, all hitting upper circuit limits with gains of around 10 per cent. Other prominent advancers included SASML, UDPL, FML, BAFS, SHCM, and ICCI. On the downside, DWTM led the decliners with a drop of nearly 12 per cent, followed by HWQS, GEMNETS, FTSM, and BRRG, which also posted notable losses.

Meanwhile, in the currency market, the Pakistani rupee recorded a slight gain against the US dollar. According to currency dealers, the rupee appreciated by 11 paisa, with the dollar being traded at Rs283.10 in early morning transactions.

PSX swings from gains to steep losses

The PSX erased all its early gains on Tuesday, with the benchmark KSE-100 index slipping into negative territory by the afternoon session amid a wave of selling pressure.

By around 3:20 PM, the KSE-100 had dropped by 1,231.36 points to stand at 138,148.69, with trading volume reaching 187.6 million shares. The market had touched an intraday high of 140,331.01 earlier in the day but retreated sharply, hitting an intraday low of 138,067.34 around 3:18 PM, reflecting a volatile trading session.
