ISLAMABAD: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has given the green light to the Ministry of Industries & Production for the export of 150,000 metric tonnes of surplus sugar.
However, this approval comes with a critical caveat: if there is any rise in the retail price of sugar, the export permission will be immediately revoked.
The ECC has mandated that the proceeds from the sugar export must be used by the sugar mills to clear overdue payments owed to farmers, ensuring financial stability for those at the grassroots level of the industry.
In addition to the sugar export decision, the ECC also sanctioned significant technical supplementary grants and approved various proposals from other ministries.
Notably, the Ministry of Federal Education & Professional Training’s proposal to exempt the Higher Education Commission (HEC) from the Relending Policy of Foreign Loans/Credits to autonomous bodies was also approved.
These measures are part of the ECC’s broader agenda to maintain economic stability while supporting key sectors and stakeholders in the country.
