ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet has given final approval for the import of 500,000 tonnes of sugar, the Ministry of National Food Security announced on Tuesday, calling the move a key step to ensure price stability in the domestic market.
According to the ministry, the sugar will be imported through government channels, and all necessary arrangements have been completed for immediate implementation.
“This initiative has been taken to maintain balance in sugar prices across the country,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that the import plan reflects a “clear and improved strategy” compared to past governments.
It further stated that in previous years, artificial shortages were often created, leading to subsidies that placed a burden on the national exchequer. In contrast, the current government’s approach aims to prevent market manipulation while avoiding unnecessary fiscal pressure.
The ministry also noted that when sugar stocks were in surplus, the government had opted to allow exports. Now, with the need to stabilise local prices, imports are being facilitated to protect consumers from market volatility.
Officials say this policy shift marks a more transparent and responsible approach to sugar management in the country.
