Pakistan total power generation

WEB DESK: In July 2024, the nation’s total power generation saw a modest year-on-year (YoY) increase of 0.3 per cent, reaching 14,880 Gigawatt hours (GWh), up from 14,839 GWh in July 2023.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) released its monthly electricity generation data, showing a significant month-on-month (MoM) rise of 10.5 per cent compared to the 13,461 GWh generated in June 2024.

Several energy sources contributed to this growth. Power generation from coal, gas, RLNG, imports from Iran, bagasse, and solar energy all registered YoY increases of 21.2 per cent, 4.5 per cent, 1.8 per cent, 66.4 per cent, 32.6 per cent, and 46.3 per cent, respectively, when compared to July 2023.

However, not all energy sources saw gains. Hydel, RFO (residual fuel oil), nuclear, and wind power production declined by 3.2 per cent, 65.4 per cent, 5.6 per cent, and 18.9 per cent YoY, respectively.

In terms of the energy mix, hydropower remained the largest contributor, accounting for 35.9 per cent of total electricity generation in July 2024. RLNG followed with a 20.0 per cent share, while coal, nuclear, and gas contributed 17.8 per cent, 13.4 per cent, and 7.9 per cent, respectively.
