International outlook

Globally, the US dollar remained steady against major currencies, including the Japanese yen, as investors anticipated the outcome of the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy decision. The Fed is expected to announce a 25-basis-point interest rate cut at the conclusion of its two-day policy meeting on Wednesday, with markets placing a 97 per cent probability of this outcome, according to CME’s FedWatch tool.

Attention will be focused on the Fed’s updated economic projections for the coming years, especially any indication of future rate cuts in 2025. With inflation and activity data remaining strong, the Fed may signal a slower pace of cuts ahead, possibly reducing the number of planned cuts in 2025 from four to three, according to market analyst Tony Sycamore from IG.

Investors are also weighing the potential impact of proposed tariffs and tax cuts by the incoming Trump administration on the Fed’s economic outlook.

The US dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, remained relatively unchanged, down 0.04 per cent at 106.89. On Monday, the index reached its highest level since November 26, touching 107.18.
