Intraday trade: PKR up by 18 paisa against USD

US dollar in Pakistani rupee

KARACHI: The Pakistani rupee (PKR) experienced a slight improvement against the US dollar (USD) on Thursday, appreciating by 0.06 per cent during the early hours of trading.

By 11 AM, the PKR was valued at Rs280.08, marking a rise of Re0.18 compared to the previous day’s close of Rs280.26.

On the global front, the yen held steady against the dollar following the announcement by former US President Donald Trump to impose a 25 per cent tariff on imported cars and light trucks from next week, sparking concerns of a trade war.

Investors remain anxious that the new tariffs could harm US economic growth and trigger inflation, though the possibility of less severe tariffs has recently eased some fears.

Since the start of the current fiscal year, the Pakistani rupee has depreciated by Rs1.92 or 0.69 per cent against the US dollar. Since the beginning of 2025, it has fallen by Rs1.71 or 0.61 per cent.

In Wednesday’s interbank trading, the rupee appreciated by 15.77 paisa, or 0.06 per cent, closing at Rs280.26 per dollar compared to the previous close of Rs280.42. Throughout the day, the currency saw an intraday high of Rs280.45 and a low of Rs280.25.

In the open market, exchange companies quoted the dollar at Rs279.50 for buying and Rs282.10 for selling.

The rupee’s performance against other major currencies showed mixed results on Wednesday:

PKR appreciated by 4.21 paisa, or 0.06 per cent, against the Saudi Riyal, closing at 74.71.

Against the Chinese Yuan, the rupee gained 2.68 paisa, or 0.07 per cent, ending the day at 38.58 from 38.61.

The rupee strengthened by 23.18 paisa, or 0.06 per cent, against the British Pound, closing at 361.82 compared to the previous day’s 362.05.

However, it lost 23.42 paisa, or 0.07 per cent, against the Swiss Franc, settling at 317.27.
