Intraday update: PKR gains 12 paisa against USD

USD to PKR today

KARACHI: The Pakistani rupee (PKR) registered a marginal improvement against the US dollar (USD), appreciating by 0.04 per cent in the interbank market during the initial trading hours on second trading day of the week.

In the morning, the Pakistani currency was hovering at Rs278.50, reflecting a gain of 12 paisa against the greenback.

The PKR depreciated by 5.95 paisa, or 0.02 per cent, against the USD in Monday’s interbank session, settling the trade at Rs278.62 per USD compared to Friday’s closing of Rs278.56.

During the current fiscal year, the PKR has weakened against the USD by 27.99 paisa, or 0.10 per cent. It has decreased by 7.11 paisa, or 0.03 per cent, since the start of 2025.

Internationally, the USD hovered near a one-week low versus major peers on Tuesday as traders considered whether President-elect Donald Trump’s tariffs would be less aggressive than initially promised.

On Monday, the greenback slid against currencies like the euro and sterling following a report in The Washington Post that Trump’s aides were exploring plans to apply tariffs only on sectors deemed critical to US national or economic security.

However, the currency recovered some ground after Trump denied the report in a post on his Truth Social platform.

The US dollar index, which gauges the currency against the euro, sterling, and four other rivals, edged up to 108.38 after dropping as low as 107.74 overnight, its weakest since December 30.
