KARACHI: On the last trading day of the week, the Pakistani rupee (PKR) gained 6 paisa against the US dollar (USD) during early trade on Friday. Exchange companies quoted the greenback at Rs278.80.
During the current fiscal year, the PKR has weakened by 51.49 paisa or 0.18 per cent against the USD. For the calendar year 2025 so far, the rupee has deteriorated by 30.61 paisa or 0.11 per cent.
In Thursday’s interbank session, the PKR depreciated by 8.66 paisa or 0.03 per cent against the dollar, closing at Rs278.86 per USD, compared to the previous day’s closing of Rs278.77.
Here’s how the PKR performed against other major foreign currencies:
British Pound: The PKR rose by 34.02 paisa or 0.10 per cent to settle Thursday at Rs340.75, up from Rs341.09 on Wednesday.
Chinese Yuan: The PKR fell by 1.29 paisa or 0.03 per cent, closing at Rs38.03 compared to Rs38.02.
Euro: The local currency strengthened by 10.60 paisa or 0.04 per cent, closing at Rs287.14 from Rs287.24.
Swiss Franc: The PKR gained 5.59 paisa or 0.02 per cent, ending the day at Rs305.75.
UAE Dirham: The PKR depreciated by 2.46 paisa or 0.03 per cent, closing at Rs75.92.
Saudi Riyal: The local unit declined by 6.07 paisa or 0.08 per cent to Rs74.32.
Japanese Yen: The rupee weakened by 0.82 paisa or 0.46 per cent to Rs1.7850 from Rs1.7768.
Globally, the US dollar weakened against the yen on Thursday, as softer-than-expected US economic data and rising expectations for a Bank of Japan interest rate hike pushed it to a near one-month low.
Recent comments by Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda and Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino have signalled that a rate hike will at least be discussed at next week’s policy meeting. Markets currently anticipate a 79 per cent chance of a 25-basis-point increase.
