KU VC Professor Dr Khalid Iraqi condolences on demise of Professor Zakaria Sajid


The Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi on Thursday expressed deep sorrow at the demise of Professor Muhammad Zakaria Sajid, prayed for the departed soul, and acknowledged his services in the field of journalism.

The deceased was one of the founding faculty members of the then Department of Journalism, now the Department of Mass Communication. He passed away at the age of 96 years. In 2014, the then President of Pakistan Mian Mamnoon Hussain awarded him the Presidential Award Tamgha-e-Imtiaz.

His funeral prayer was offered at Masjid-e-Ibrahim after Namaz-e-Zuhar and later buried at the KU Graveyard. The KU VC Professor Dr Khalid Iraqi, noted journalists, secretary, former secretary, and members of the Karachi Press Club, students, faculty members, staff, and employees attended the funeral.

Professor Zakaria Sajid son of Roshan Din started his teaching career in the early 60’s at the then-KU Department of Journalism. In 1986, during his tenure, the Department of Mass Communication was established. In 1988, Zakaria Sajid retired as the chairman of the mass communication department, and even after his retirement he taught for many years in the department.

Professor Muhammad Zakaria was born on July 1, 1928, and started his career as a lecturer at the KU on November 01, 1966. He was promoted to Assistant Professor on August 28, 1977, and Associate Professor on October 11, 1982, and became Professor on December 08, 1985, and retired from the department on June 30, 1988. The deceased taught at the University of Karachi for 21 years and seven months.
