WEB DESK: Hold onto your toy cars, folks, Hollywood is about to turn your childhood racetrack dreams into reality! Warner Bros. and Mattel have tapped Crazy Rich Asians and Wicked director Jon M. Chu to helm a live-action Hot Wheels movie, and if his track record is any clue, this film will be anything but a slow ride.
The high-octane flick, penned by They Cloned Tyrone writers Juel Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier, promises to bring Mattel’s iconic die-cars to life with Chu’s signature flair for dazzling visuals and heartfelt storytelling.
“Hot Wheels isn’t just about speed—it’s about imagination, connection, and that vroom-vroom thrill we all loved as kids,” Chu said in a press release, clearly ready to make audiences feel like they’re back on the living room floor, racing their favorite toy cars.
Produced by Bad Robot (J.J. Abrams’ powerhouse behind Star Wars and Star Trek) and Mattel Studios (fresh off the Barbie billion-dollar joyride), this project is stacking up to be a blockbuster pit crew.
J.J. Abrams shared: “We were already hyped—but adding Jon, Juel, and Tony? This just went from zero to 100 real quick.”
Chu’s last film, Wicked, raked in USD700 million, proving he knows how to turn nostalgia into box-office gold. Meanwhile, Mattel’s Barbie proved toy adaptations can be both critically adored and wildly profitable. Now, they’re betting Hot Wheels—the best-selling toy car brand ever—will be their next victory lap.
While plot details are still under wraps, expect sleek cars, insane stunts, and maybe even a loop-de-loop or two.
So, rev your engines—this is one movie that won’t be stuck in park for long!
