WEB DESK: Demi Moore, Emilia Pérez, and Shōgun dominated the 2025 Golden Globe Awards, which aired Sunday night from Los Angeles, officially kicking off the awards season.

This year’s winners reflected themes of aging, immigration, acceptance, and survival, though the overall tone of the event was celebratory, maintaining the Golden Globes’ reputation as Hollywood’s biggest and most festive gathering.

BEST ACTRESS WIN FOR DEMI MOORE

Demi Moore made a powerful comeback, winning her first Golden Globe for Best Actress. Her role in The Substance, a body-horror film that has revitalized her career, earned her the award.

The 62-year-old actress gave an emotional acceptance speech, revealing how the role came at a low point in her life. “This award is a celebration of the gift of doing something I love and being reminded that I do belong,” she told the audience.

The Substance follows a woman who trades her body for a younger, more beautiful version of herself. Moore expressed shock at her win, particularly in a competitive category that included Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Mikey Madison (Anora), and Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez).

“I’ve been in this industry for over 45 years, and this is the first time I’ve ever won anything as an actor,” she said.

BIG WINNERS IN FILM

The top film of the night was Emilia Pérez, a Spanish-language musical about a Mexican drug lord who changes gender. The movie won four awards, including Best Musical or Comedy Film.

Karla Sofía Gascón, a trans actress who stars in the film, accepted the award with a powerful message: “Raise your voice and say, ‘I am who I am, not who you want.’”

The film also won Best Original Song and Best Non-English Language Film. Director Jacques Audiard described it as “a beacon of light in these troubled times.”

Other film winners included The Brutalist, which won three awards, including Best Drama and Best Actor for Adrien Brody. The movie tells the story of a Hungarian architect rebuilding his life in the U.S. after World War II.

Sebastian Stan won Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for A Different Man, where he plays a character with a disfiguring facial condition. In his speech, Stan called for greater acceptance of disability and disfigurement, urging society to normalize these experiences.

TV CATEGORIES

In television, Shōgun was the standout winner, claiming four awards, including Best Drama Series. The show, set in 17th-century Japan, continued its Emmy-winning streak.

Other notable TV winners included Jeremy Allen White (The Bear), Jodie Foster (True Detective), and Jean Smart (Hacks). The Best Limited Series award went to Baby Reindeer, with its writer and creator Richard Gadd accepting the prize.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres delivered one of the night’s surprises, winning Best Drama Actress for her performance in I’m Still Here. She beat Hollywood stars like Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman to take the award.

Kieran Culkin won Best Supporting Actor for A Real Pain, a film about two cousins traveling across Poland in memory of their grandmother. Reflecting on his first Golden Globe nomination as a child, Culkin called this win “the best date night my wife and I ever had.”

Wicked, despite missing out on major categories, won the Box Office Achievement Prize. Director Jon M. Chu praised the loyal fanbase of both the film and the original stage musical.

The 2025 Golden Globe Awards showcased a mix of surprises and triumphs, setting the stage for the Oscars and celebrating the industry’s resilience and creativity.
