KARACHI: The first match of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Champions Trophy has just begun with the host team Pakistan choosing to field after winning the toss against New Zealand. Captain Mohammad Rizwan has assured that the team has learnt from the mistakes made in the tri-series, and they will try to dismiss New Zealand for the lowest possible score.

Haris Rauf took the third wicket of the match in the 17th over. Daryl Mitchell was sent off after he attempted a pull shot. Rauf’s delivery didn’t give Mitchell enough time to create room for the pull, and popped high off his bat towards mid-on where Shaheen took the catch.

Naseem Shah would take advantage of Pakistan’s new found momentum, taking another wicket in the very next over. It was Kane Williamson who was sent off on the second delivery he faced, after only making one run. Williamson was caught behind by Mohammad Rizwan, putting the Pakistani wicket-keeper just one more catch or stumping away from reaching 100 dismissals.

Pakistan finally got their breakthrough in the eighth over, as Abrar Ahmed became the first bowler in the 2025 Champions Trophy to take a wicket. He bowled Devon Conway, who had made 10 runs up to that point, with a carrom ball.

After Pakistan chose to field first, Shaheen Shah Afridi bowled the first over. And immediately, on the second delivery of the match, Pakistan suffered a huge blow. Fakhar Zaman was injured while attempting to stop a boundary from Will Young. He left the field while holding his lower back and is now replaced on the field by Kamran Ghulam.
