573 govt servants face NAB probe in Rs70 billion corruption cases

ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) is currently investigating 573 government employees for their alleged involvement in corruption cases involving Rs70 billion.
According documents with Hum Investigation Team (HIT) nearly 500 retired and serving government employees have entered into plea bargain with NAB, totalling Rs7 billion.
The officers have been implicated in 1,452 different cases for inquiries amounting to Rs50 billion. The documents further show that over 400 public servant are facing various trials, and of them, 90 are under investigation and 80 are ongoing inquiries.
These individuals are accused of misuse of power and embezzlement of public funds.
The documents further disclosed that 79 patwaris (revenue officials) and land department employees have entered into plea bargain worth Rs 1.5 billion. Despite ongoing investigations, 123 government employees continue to work in their respective departments in centre and provinces.
The NAB has received cases involving 2,593 government employees from various institutions, resulting in the conviction of 229 officials for corruption. Currently, 576 government employees are under NAB scrutiny, with cases against 196 retired and serving officials reopened.
Region-specific data reveals that 40 corrupt employees from Karachi have made plea bargains worth over Rs1.5 billion. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 114 corrupt employees have entered into plea bargains totalling Rs1.27 billion. From Peshawar, 46 corrupt employees returned Rs1.34 billion to NAB.

Additionally, 84 corrupt employees from Rawalpindi returned Rs630 million, 13 from Multan returned Rs180 million, and 29 from Sukkur returned Rs220 million.
Approximately 100 corrupt employees from Lahore have entered into deals with NAB worth nearly Rs1 billion. These revelations underscore the widespread issue of corruption within various government departments, highlighting NAB’s ongoing efforts to hold accountable those who misuse public resources.
