Senior Pakistani official in Hong Kong accused of multi-million rupee corruption

Corruption

ISLAMABAD: A senior Pakistani official in Hong Kong is facing serious allegations of corruption after revelations that the official was involved in what appears to be a multimillion-rupee graft scam.

According to the disclosed documents available with Hum Investigation Team (HIT), the Pakistan mission in Hong Kong had written a letter to the local Hong Kong Anti-Corruption Commission, requesting an investigation into the corruption allegations.

The Pakistani consul general has also sent a letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, drawing attention to the issue.

The senior official at the Pakistan mission is accused of illicitly receiving a substantial amount of money from a local property owner. The letter emphasised that all these transactions were unlawful and tantamount to the embezzlement of Pakistan’s own funds.

The documents also show banking records, which serve as compelling evidence that for several years, substantial amounts of money were being unlawfully transferred from the local property owner to the senior official’s accounts.

The Hong Kong Anti-Corruption Commission has recorded statements from Pakistani officials, while the Pakistan Mission had already confirmed the allegations and requested an investigation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In the consul general’s letter, it has been stressed that the case is of great importance, warranting thorough investigation in both Hong Kong and Pakistan.

The foreign ministry has initiated inquiries into the matter, as the senior official faces allegations of engaging in unlawful activities.

The officer has, however, maintained innocence, stating that the allegeations were baseless. The officer is said to have told the authorities to submit the rejoinder against the allegations.

On the other hand, the consul general has pointed out that the senior official had unethically benefited from Pakistan’s funds through an alliance with the local property owner, prompting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to investigate the matter further.
