12 labourers killed in Islamabad wall collapse


 

Islamabad: At least 12 labourers were crushed to death as wall of an under-construction underpass collapsed in Golra Mor area of Islamabad.

The city received over 200mm of rain on Wednesday – the heaviest this monsoon season.

According to police, rescue teams have recovered the dead bodies from the debris of the 100 feet long structure where labourers had erected tents.

Rescue operation is underway to rescue those trapped under the rubble.

The city of Rawalpindi is currently grappling with the aftermath of torrential rains, as low-lying areas have been inundated and roads submerged under several feet of water. The situation has been exacerbated by the Nallah Lai river, which has surpassed the critical mark of fourteen feet due to the heavy downpour.

According to the Meteorological Department, Rawalpindi has experienced a staggering 200 mm of rainfall so far. The water level in Nallah Lai has soared past the danger threshold of 14 feet, and unfortunately, it continues to rise. In response to the worsening conditions, sirens have been sounded, and announcements have been made in mosques throughout the Gwalmandi area to alert residents and ensure their safety.

The local authorities have swiftly taken action to address the crisis. Rescue 1122 Rawalpindi, the city’s dedicated emergency response service, has been promptly mobilized in anticipation of further rainfall. Rescue personnel have been strategically positioned along the banks of Nullah Lai to provide immediate assistance. Additionally, rescue teams have been dispatched to vulnerable areas such as Katarian, Gwalmandi, Swan Pul, and other low-lying regions to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected population.

In light of the emergency situation, the rescue spokesperson urged the citizens to remain vigilant and report any emergencies promptly to the rescue helpline, 1122. This will enable the rescue teams to respond swiftly and effectively to any distress calls, ensuring the timely evacuation and assistance of those in need.

The heavy rains and subsequent flooding have resulted in the displacement of numerous individuals. Efforts are underway to provide relief and support to those affected by the deluge. The authorities, along with various humanitarian organizations, are working tirelessly to mitigate the impact of the floods and assist the affected population during this challenging time.

The residents of Rawalpindi are urged to exercise caution and adhere to safety guidelines issued by the local authorities until the floodwaters recede and the situation stabilizes.
