20kg gold goes missing from Lahore’s jewellery market

LAHORE: Police have started probe after the alleged disappearance of 20 kilograms of gold from Lahore’s Latif Jewellery Market.

Police have registered multiple cases on the complaints of affected jewellers. Jeweller Noor-ul-Ain has lodged a case over the disappearance of gold worth Rs90 million.

The complainant stated that the gold, valued at Rs90 million, had been entrusted to Sheikh Waseem Akhtar as a deposit, but despite repeated demands, the accused failed to return it.

Police said the accused, Sheikh Waseem Akhtar, fled after taking gold from multiple jewellers.

Achhra police have registered a case and intensified efforts to arrest the suspect.

Police said that the process of registering cases of all affected jewellers is continuing at a fast pace.

According to another case registered against accused Sheikh Waseem, he allegedly misappropriated gold worth Rs90 million belonging to Noor-ul-Ain.

Police have launched investigations into fraud and other related aspects.

According to records, the suspect left Lahore airport for Malaysia on November 8, prior to the incident, and returned to Lahore from Thailand on November 16.

His foreign travel dates back to May 12, 2007, during which he travelled extensively to Malaysia, Bangkok, Dubai and various cities in Saudi Arabia.

The travel history shows Sheikh Waseem visited Saudi Arabia 12 times and Dubai eight times. Police said he made his last phone call at 11:26 pm before switching off his mobile phone, and the last caller has been taken into custody for investigation.

According to police records, three vehicles were used by the accused. One vehicle was recently transferred to another person’s name, while investigations into the remaining two are under way.
