ISLAMABAD: Earthquake tremors were felt parts of Punjab on Tuesday, including Islamabad, Lahore and several other cities, with authorities reporting a moderate magnitude quake, the National Seismic Monitoring Centre said.

The tremors were also felt in Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin, Jhelum, Okara and Sheikhupura, prompting brief panic among residents, though no immediate reports of casualties or damage were received.

The seismic monitoring centre said that the earthquake measured 4.7 on the Richter scale, with a depth of 18 kilometres.

It said the epicentre of the quake was located in Gujranwala district.

Officials did not immediately issue further details on possible aftershocks, while residents in several cities reported feeling mild shaking before the tremors subsided.

Earthquakes are relatively common in Pakistan, which lies on a major seismic boundary, and authorities routinely advise preparedness measures in urban centres.
