Gilgit: The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) of Gilgit-Baltistan has made notable strides in a corruption case involving the embezzlement of millions of rupees from government funds allocated to City Hospital Gilgit.

Following an initial investigation, ACE on Tuesday arrested a hospital employee and a contractor, marking the commencement of what is being termed “one of the largest corruption crackdowns in the history of the region”.

According to a statement issued by the ACE, the arrests come in the wake of allegations that substantial funds, designated for the procurement of medicines for needy patients at City Hospital, were misappropriated during the fiscal year 2020/21. The former medical superintendent (MS) of the hospital, allegedly involved in the corruption, has reportedly gone into hiding to evade arrest.

Sources said that the ACE, acting on complaints, conducted thorough investigations to identify those responsible for the mismanagement of funds. The department is currently conducting raids to apprehend more individuals implicated in the case.
