Adiala jail chief rejects Imran Khan sons’ tweets

RAWALPINDI: The Rawalpindi Central Jail’s superintendent has said that the sons of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan shared a baseless and fabricated post on X, claiming that several prisoners had died of hepatitis inside Adiala jail. However, no such incident has occurred, he said.

On July 31, Imran Khan’s sons Kasim and Sulaiman alleged “Imran Khan is bathing in muddy water — and we don’t mean unfiltered water, we mean literally dirty, muddy water. In such conditions, 10 prisoners have died in thejail.”

Earlier, Imran Khan’s sons had appealed to US President Donald Trump and other global leaders to help secure their father’s release from prison.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Adiala jail superintendent said “the jail administration is diligently performing its duties in providing prisoners with food, hygiene and other essential facilities.”

He said that as far as contagious diseases such as Hepatitis B, C and AIDS are concerned, “all new inmates and under-trial prisoners are properly screened for these illnesses before being admitted to the jail.”

The jail superintendent said that “if a contagious disease is diagnosed, the affected prisoner is immediately isolated from others and treatment begins without delay. The treatment course is completed, and if the prisoner is released during this time, they are provided with the remaining medication to continue the course.”

He said that detailed medical and psychological profiles of all prisoners and under-trial detainees are maintained. “The prison has a fully equipped hospital with eight male and two female doctors available 24/7 for inmates’ medical care and rehabilitation,” he said.

According to the jail superintendent, in case of a medical emergency, any prisoner is immediately transferred to the Benazir Bhutto General Hospital, the Rawalpindi District Headquarters Hospital, the Holy Family Hospital, or the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences. In the past one year, no inmate has died of hepatitis inside the jail.

However, he said that a few inmates, while under treatment for various illnesses at the aforementioned hospitals, had passed away.

“Therefore, the entire social media post is baseless and fabricated, with no relation to reality. Such false allegations against institutions are tantamount to spreading unrest,” he said.

The jail superintendent further said that “the administration is fully committed to the protection, security, and health of inmates. The claims and rumours being circulated by Imran Khan’s sons on social media have no truth to them and are aimed purely at creating sensationalism.”

He said that “Imran Khan is enjoying more facilities and privileges than any other prisoner in the jail and is not being subjected to any form of discrimination.”

It may be recalled that Kasim had claimed that his father was being kept in “extremely poor conditions” that were “worsening by the hour.”

He further claimed that Imran Khan was in “solitary confinement and the cell he is in is in a terrible state — to put it bluntly, it’s uninhabitable.”

He alleged that “he is bathing in muddy water — not just unfiltered, but genuinely dirty, muddy water. Ten prisoners have died in this jail under such conditions.”

Expressing sorrow over not being able to meet his father, Kasim said, “There were times when he was kept in a cell without light for 10 days,” calling it a “tactic of torture.”
