Afghan veteran Mohammad Nabi shares BPL pitch with son

DHAKA: Afghanistan’s veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi made history on Friday by playing alongside his son Hasan Issa Khail in a Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) match, becoming the first father-son pair to feature for the same team in T20 cricket.

The pair turned out for Noakhali Express, where 19-year-old Hasan shared a 53-run partnership for the fourth wicket with his father. Hasan went on to score 92 off 60 balls, underlining his arrival on the professional stage.

Nabi, one of Afghanistan’s most experienced cricketers, said the moment was a deeply personal milestone.

“I am very happy to be playing with my son. I have been waiting for this moment for a long time,” Nabi said.

“I trained him to become a professional cricketer, and he showed a strong performance on his debut.”

Hasan said he shared a close bond with his father but acknowledged his strict approach on the training ground.

“We are good friends. My father is not strict by nature, but he becomes tough when he is training me,” Hasan said, adding that his dream was to represent Afghanistan at international level.

The rare family milestone adds a unique chapter to the rapidly growing history of T20 cricket, where short-format leagues have increasingly brought together players from different generations.
