After facing brunt of Karachi rain havoc The Commons determined to bounce back

KARACHI: Commons has announced that its event will go ahead tonight, March 20, after a freak storm on the night of March 18 caused major disruption, damaged stalls and forced the gathering into disarray.

In a message shared by the organisers, Commons said the night had not gone as planned, but stressed that the event has always been about community and that it now stands with every vendor affected as it works to rebuild together. All unscanned and online tickets from March 18 and 19 will remain valid for tonight’s event, while vendors have also been encouraged to return.

The event, being held at DHA Sports Club, Main Khan Academy, is scheduled to run from 6pm to 3am and will feature shopping, food, mehndi, churriyan and a qawwali performance by Fareed Ayaz and Abu Mohammad from 11pm onwards. The resumption comes after the March 18 storm turned a lively Chand Raat marketplace into a scene of panic, as strong winds and rain battered Karachi and forced attendees and sellers to scramble for safety. For many small businesses, the disruption came at one of the most important selling moments of the Eid season.

The event being held for the past five years had drawn a large crowd of families, shoppers and small businesses hoping to make the most of the pre-Eid rush. But the sudden storm upended the evening, with stalls reportedly damaged, decorations torn down and merchandise scattered as the weather worsened. What began as a celebratory marketplace quickly became a scramble for safety, with attendees seeking shelter as conditions deteriorated.

The chaos at Commons Karachi reflected the wider havoc caused across the city that night, when the storm triggered deadly incidents, infrastructure damage and widespread disruption in several neighbourhoods. Against that backdrop, the event’s collapse became part of a much larger story of Karachi’s vulnerability to sudden and extreme weather.

By reopening the event, Commons Karachi is attempting both a recovery and a show of solidarity with its vendor community. But tonight’s return is about more than just restarting a market. It is also an effort to restore the festive mood after a night that underscored how quickly Karachi’s outdoor events can be upended by sudden extreme weather.
